We want every visit to Obscura to be a great one. This policy explains how cancellations, deposits and refunds work for reservations, private events, gift vouchers, and food and drinks. It forms part of our Terms and Conditions and does not affect your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (CPA).
If you can no longer make your booking, please cancel or change it through your Dineplan confirmation, by emailing hello@obscurabar.co.za or by calling 010 500 7573 as early as possible, so that we can offer the table to someone else. There is no charge for cancelling a standard booking.
Bookings for [6] or more guests require a deposit of [R200] per person. The full deposit is deducted from your bill on the day.
| When you cancel or change | What happens to your deposit |
|---|---|
| More than 48 hours before your booking | Full refund, or we move the deposit to a new date |
| Less than 48 hours before your booking | Deposit is forfeited |
| No-show (without letting us know) | Deposit is forfeited |
| Fewer guests arrive than booked | The deposit for missing guests is forfeited, unless you told us more than 48 hours in advance |
As allowed by section 17 of the CPA, a forfeited deposit reflects a reasonable charge for holding a table we could otherwise have filled. If you arrive and your party spends less than the deposit paid, the unused balance is not refunded.
Private bookings for the Dali Room or exclusive use of the venue require a deposit of 50% of the agreed minimum spend to confirm the date. The balance is payable on the day of the event.
| When you cancel | Refund of deposit |
|---|---|
| More than 14 days before the event | Full refund |
| 7 to 14 days before the event | 50% refund |
| Less than 7 days before the event | No refund |
Final guest numbers must be confirmed 72 hours before the event. The agreed minimum spend applies even if fewer guests attend. Specific terms for your event will be set out in your event confirmation.
We will refund your deposit in full, whenever you cancel, if you cannot attend because of the death or hospitalisation of the person who made the booking or a guest in the party (we may ask for reasonable proof).
We are also always happy to discuss genuine emergencies with you — please get in touch.
If we have to cancel or cannot honour your booking for any reason — including load-shedding, water outages, severe weather or other events outside our control — we will let you know as soon as possible and refund any deposit in full, or move your booking to another date if you prefer.
If something you ordered is not right — it is not what you ordered, not prepared correctly, or not up to our standard — please tell your server straight away. We will gladly replace it or remove it from your bill.
Because food and drinks are prepared to order, we are unable to offer refunds for items that have been fully consumed, or after you have left the venue, unless there was a genuine defect in the item.
We may issue gift vouchers on request. Where we do, they are valid for three years from the date of issue and cannot be exchanged for cash. Vouchers are non-refundable once issued, unless the law requires otherwise or we are unable to honour them.
The 7-day cooling-off period in the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 does not apply to bookings for food, drink or leisure services for a specific date, as set out in section 42 of that Act. Cancellations of these bookings are handled under this policy instead.
Email hello@obscurabar.co.za with the name on the booking, the booking date and the reason for your request. We aim to respond within [3 business days].
Approved refunds are paid back to the original payment method within [7–10 business days]. The time it takes to reflect in your account depends on your bank or card provider.
For any questions about cancellations or refunds, email hello@obscurabar.co.za or call 010 500 7573.
